Background
Company B offers sample management technology that stores and retrieves
samples in an ultra low temperature environment. This state-of-the-art process enhances
the drug discovery and research of their clients by enabling them to easily and accurately
store, retrieve and manage samples in freezing environments.
Situation
The initial system automated microplates, but Company B identified a strong
need for vial storage and retrieval in a negative 80C environment. Customer demand was
increasing and Company B was facing a short product launch timeframe with their goal of the
LabAutomation2003 show only a few months away. They wanted a system that would allow rapid
automated access to vials in ultra-low temperature storage while maintaining a frozen state
throughout all steps of the process.
Solution
Company B chose Scinomix to do the design and manufacturing of this new
equipment. This new technology offers a fully automated robotic laboratory that performs
storage, retrieval, sorting, cataloging, volume estimation, barcode reading, and re-racking
on a vial-by-vial basis at the ultra-low temperature requested.
Scinomix took Customer B’s existing equipment into consideration and designed
the new system to be capable of full integration with external robotic lab systems. Future
growth was also accounted for and a scalable solution was designed to allow further storage
and processing capacity as the customer’s needs increase. Scinomix laboratory robotics
expertise and dedication enabled them to build this system within a few short months.
Results and Benefits
Scinomix was not only able to meet project goals set by Company B but the
work was cost contained Company B encountered a successful launch of their new equipment
at the LabAutomation2003 show due to Scinomix’s fast turn around time and high quality work.
As always, Scinomix paid extra attention to even the smallest details such as skins, paint,
and decals which added to the polished presentation revealed at the show. Since the show
Company B has seen sales responses that justify the project work and investment, and the
system continues to run daily.
